“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8 NIV
Have you ever lost your way? Not geographically, but mentally and emotionally. While eating cream of buckwheat with strawberries, my thoughts felt as fuzzy as a grey cloud looming overhead. My heart raced with anxiety. Chiding myself, I debated whether I go to the gym or start a writing project. Plus, I had a much bigger problem on my mind for which I needed discernment.
Suddenly, I blurted out Lord, “I need Your help to guide me in Your plans.” In front of me sat my verse of the day calendar, and I read Psalm 32:8.
God tells us He will ‘instruct’ or give us insight into a matter. He will ‘teach’ or instruct us in a direction, and He will ‘counsel’ by giving us advice. God will even ‘watch’ over us. He can do that through prayer, His word, through godly people, or circumstances that align with His truth. So I prayed and believed God would instruct me.
That afternoon, I happened to flip through an old journal I unearthed in my attic and found a a card with someone’s name written on it. My thoughts sped with wonder since morning; I had prayed about the person written on the card! The card’s message read, “God’s timing is perfect; follow Him.” What clear counsel from God! I sensed God telling me to wait in my communication with the very person written on the card. Relieve, I realized God, in His sovereignty, answered my prayer using the contents from a journal I hadn’t seen in years.
God answers our prayers uniquely; nothing is too small or too big.
What do you need? A doctor’s skill, wisdom in purchasing an item, or appropriate words to communicate after a conflict with a family member? Wait on the Lord, and He will counsel you. When He answers your prayer, your faith will deepen for the next time you need God’s direction.
