Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. ~Genesis 3:8a (NIV)
This weekend, I took a walk with a good friend. When we greeted, we giggled since we hadn’t seen each other in weeks. While we walked around the loop in my neighborhood, we talked freely about our families, our jobs, and our health. I shared a smoothie recipe and she asked where I got my haircut, we even discussed our landscaping. Everything was out in the open and in parting we smiled and said, “good catching up.”
What about walking with God? When you spend time with God how free are you to share? Can you talk honestly? Does your time with Him feel like good friends catching up? After Adam and Eve took the forbidden fruit, they stopped walking with God, covered themselves and hid. When God called to Adam, “Where are you?” he answered, “I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
Nakedness leaves us vulnerable to shame and scrutiny. Don’t we often feel this way after we sin? At times, God’s holy character feels too overpowering to come near Him. Jesus humbled Himself as a servant. He clothes our nakedness with His righteous garments and invites us to walk with Him unashamed and unafraid.
For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10 (NASB)
Sin keeps us from walking with God in the cool of the day. If you feel tempted to hide from God, don’t cover up. Look at your spiritual clothes! You are not naked, but clothed in Jesus’ righteous clothes. He makes us beautiful. Let no shame, fear, or mistake keep you from walking with God.
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. ~Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)
Come to God and tell Him everything on your heart knowing you are adorned with the purity of Christ. The enemy wants us to hide from God, but God made a way to restore us from hiding through the blood of Christ.
Take a walk with God. What will you talk with Him about?
Father, thank you for inviting me to walk with You. I desire to know Your ways. You are merciful and clothe me with the righteous robes of Jesus. Show me if there is something I’m keeping from You. Revive and refresh my spirit. Amen.
